The Great Horsemeat Scandal
In 2013, horsemeat was found in processed beef, causing quite the outrage. The Great Horsemeat Scandal infographic explores who is to blame for horsemeat in processed beef, and if horsemeat is bad for human consumption. The infographic notes that 10 million burgers were recalled due to traces of horse DNA in the product. Additionally, it was found that a major supplier’s meat, which was incorporated into frozen spaghetti, contained 60% horsemeat. As a result, meat in the EU is now being tested for equine DNA as well as a powerful anti-inflammatory drug given to horses. The scandal also resulted in three arrests though the remainder of the infographic notes that horsemeat by itself is not harmful to humans.
